AMERICAN SOCIETY OF INTERIOR DESIGNERS - SOUTH FLORIDA CHAPTER

The office view was the main inspiration for our rug design, and the project revolved around creating a piece that would harmonize with the breathtaking landscape of Miami Beach. The office overlooks the vast extension of the island from its southernmost point, offering a bird’s-eye perspective of the playful interconnection between the street landscape and the more subdued color of the buildings, creating distinguished linear patterns that adapt to the island’s geography. Our client desired an office space that functioned efficiently and resonated aesthetically with this spectacular view. The goal was to create a design that embodied sophistication and reflected the natural beauty and architectural essence of Miami Beach while ensuring the space served its dual purpose as a productive workspace and an informal guest bedroom.

In our search for the perfect rug to complement our vision, we discovered the exquisite Nightcap rug collection from Art & Loom. The original design in this collection is meticulously crafted, presenting an array of repeating twirling lines that draw the eye and invite contemplation. Working closely with their team, we customized a rug incorporating a large-scale version of its original repeat pattern. The intention was to bring the green color from the foliage of the city trees into the room while incorporating twirling lines in silver, mimicking the city buildings. The result was a large “P-shaped” rug that allowed us to create a circular focal point closer to the window, where the workstation is located while creating an asymmetrical linear extension running in front of the daybed to provide additional comfort.

The rug’s design addressed the challenge of defining distinct zones within the office without using physical barriers. The office served on rare occasions as an informal guest bedroom, and the rug’s shape created an indirect visual distinction of where to stand depending on how the space was being used. The round section of the rug, where the desk is located, clearly demarcates the workstation space, almost asking guests not to intrude and maintaining that area as more private. The linear extension of the rug in front of the daybed provided a welcoming area for guests, guiding them to stay closer to the seating area and away from the opposite wall where a wall-mounted storage and TV were located.
